Overview
The Microsoft Business Central integration synchronizes contacts and companies from Business Central as a source, meaning that sync.blue® never writes anything back.
Step 1: Create an app registration in Microsoft Entra ID
sync.blue® signs in to Business Central as an application. To do this, you first need an app registration in Microsoft Entra ID.
- Open the Microsoft Entra admin center and go to App registrations → New registration.
- Enter a name such as “sync.blue® Business Central.”
- On the app’s Overview page, copy:
- Directory ID (tenant)
-
Application ID (client)
- Go to Certificates & secrets → New client secret. Select a description and an expiration period, then click Add.
- Copy the Value of the secret. It is displayed only once.
- Go to API permissions → Add a permission → Dynamics 365 Business Central.
-
Select Application permissions (not “Delegated”), check API.ReadWrite.All, and click Add permissions.
- Click Grant admin consent for <your organization> and confirm. A green check mark must appear under Status.
Despite its name, API.ReadWrite.All is the standard application permission for the Business Central API. sync.blue® uses it exclusively to read data.
Important: Client secrets expire. Note the expiration date and create a new secret in good time.
Step 2: Register the app in Business Central
The Entra permission from Step 1 only allows the app to call the Business Central API. It does not grant access to data. To do this, the app must also be registered in Business Central and assigned a permission set.
- In Business Central, use the search (magnifying glass or Alt+Q) to open the Microsoft Entra Applications page.
- Click New to create a new entry.
- Enter the Application ID (client) from Step 1 in the Client ID field and enter a description such as “sync.blue.”
- Set the Status to Enabled and confirm the consent dialog.
- On the same card, under User permission sets, add, for example, the D365 BASIC permission set.
Step 3: Connect Business Central to sync.blue®
- In sync.blue®, create a new connection and select Microsoft Business Central as the source.
- Select the desired app to use as the destination.
- Fill in the following fields and click Save and test.
| Field | Required | What to enter |
|---|---|---|
| Tenant ID | Yes | The Directory ID (tenant) from Step 1 |
| Client ID | Yes | The Application ID (client) from Step 1 |
| Client secret | Yes | The Value of the client secret from Step 1 (not the secret ID) |
| Environment | No | Name of your Business Central environment. Leave blank for Production
|
| Company | Depending | Name of the Business Central company to synchronize. May only be left blank if there is only one company. |
